Ms ADDISON (Wendouree) (09:58): I wish to pay my respects to the life of David Haymes, who passed away on Tuesday, 15 June 2021. David Haymes was the beloved head of Australia’s first family of paint. He was husband to Jenny; father to Belinda, Matt and Tim; father-in-law to Rod, Kym and Colette; and grandpa to Chloe, Joel, Gemma, Gabrielle, Riley and Charlotte.

David was the face of Haymes paint for more than 50 years, building a successful family-owned Ballarat business and making it a household name nationally. David attended Ballarat College and rowed in the winning head of the lake crew in 1960. His connection and commitment to the school, now Ballarat Clarendon College, was constant.

A passionate and visionary businessman, David was well respected across the Ballarat community. He was a long-serving member on the Courier advisory board and was instrumental in the establishment of the Committee for Ballarat. David was a generous supporter of many local organisations, including the McCallum foundation, the Ballarat Tramway Museum and the Ballaarat Mechanics Institute. He was a life member of Apex Wendouree and the Ballarat and District Model Railway Club.

In recognition of his outstanding service to business and community David was awarded an honorary doctorate of business from the University of Ballarat, now Federation University. In a fitting tribute, flags above Ballarat Town Hall flew at half-mast to honour the significant contribution David made to Ballarat. David was also active in the Australian Chamber of Manufacturers, the Australian Paint Manufacturers Federation and Family Business Australia. Vale, David Haymes.
