Black Hill Students Preparing for Bike Ed Challenge

Students at Black Hill Primary School will take part in a Bike Ed Challenge to put their riding skills to the test thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s Community Road Safety Grants Program.

Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison said students will complete a number of courses as part of the challenge including bike skills, balance, coordination, peripheral vision, and decision making, before participating in the challenge with three other schools.

In the lead up to the event, students practice skills including hand signals, scanning, tight U-turns, and slow riding along a balance beam.

The Bike Ed Challenge is funded as part of the $1.5 million Community Road Safety Grants Program which delivers targeted education programs and provides local solutions to local road safety concerns.

Almost $146,000 has been invested in 33 local initiatives across the Grampians region this year – including bike education and skills workshops, pedestrian safety lessons for students, motorised scooter safety classes and road safety education addressing distraction, vehicle safety and high-risk driver behaviour.

The Bike Ed program is a free in-school program that teaches school students about road rules, riding in a shared environment and safe riding behaviours and was recently expanded to reach students from grade 1 to year 8.
