Better Connection for Ballarat Cyclists and Pedestrians

Works are underway to upgrade one of Ballarat’s busiest intersections to better connect cyclists and pedestrians to Ballarat’s centre.

The works at Drummond and Sturt Streets intersection will improve traffic flow and connect the shared user path in the centre median gardens.

New LED traffic signals, pedestrian lanterns, and kerbs will be installed, and new line markings and road signs will provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists and reduce the risk of crashes and risk-taking behaviour.

The pedestrian-operated signals will connect to the shared path on the other side and enable cyclists and pedestrians to cross the median strip safely.

The Drummond Street and Sturt Street intersection is an important, high-volume corridor connecting hospitals, health services, schools, public transport, and local businesses, with approximately 35,000 vehicles using the intersection per day.

The works are part of the $9.3 million investment in improving safety and accessibility in the city centre for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Traffic flow will be maintained in all directions to reduce travel delays during works, with emergency vehicle access maintained throughout the works. Traffic management will be in place, including 40 km/h limits and lane closures, and alternative pedestrian access will be in place for the duration of the works.

The City of Ballarat’s Sturt Street upgrade, which includes the shared bike path between Dawson and Grenville streets, will start in late January 2022 after the Road National Championships.
