A Big Lift for Ballarat Station
The Allan Labor Government is one step closer to completing the Ballarat Station Upgrade, with the new pedestrian overpass now lifted into place – boosting safety, accessibility and connectivity for public transport users.
Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison MP today announced the completed station will open to passengers in April 2026. The installation of the 28-metre overpass, which forms the centrepiece of the station’s transformation, marks the last major milestone before opening. The overpass will allow passengers to safely cross the rail line without needing to leave the station.
An 800-tonne crane was used to lift the 65-tonne steel structure into place at the eastern end of the station while trains weren’t running over the weekend, along with two 10-metre lift shafts which will connect the overpass to each platform.
The overpass is wide enough for two wheelchairs or mobility scooters to pass each other, improving accessibility for passengers with mobility needs.
The final design, endorsed by Heritage Victoria, was also developed in consultation with disability advocacy groups and responds to the community’s request for a structure that reflects the station’s heritage while minimising the visual impact on existing buildings.
The silver-grey cladding features a series of curves that echo the heritage ironwork on the platform canopies, and includes a unique perforated design to provide visibility and natural light while still offering protection from the weather.
With the overpass now in place, crews will continue internal fit-out works, including lighting, tiling, handrails and tactiles on each platform staircase, and glass installation in the lifts, lift shafts and belvedere balconies.
The upgrade follows the opening of the accessible northern entrance earlier this year, which now features a new ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic door.
Buses will continue to replace trains between Ballarat and Melton until last service Friday, 28 November, allowing crews to safely complete work on the overpass and undertake scheduled maintenance within the rail corridor.
