Making It Easier To Recycle Batteries

Labor is making it safer and easier for families to recycle their old batteries with more battery collection bins rolling out across the state.

Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos today announced an expansion of 50 battery recycle collection points, making it safer and easier to dispose of used batteries.

The Allan Labor Government is funding local councils and registered charities to create the new battery drop off points and upgrade 17 existing sites to handle more batteries.

Batteries need to go to specialist battery recyclers equipped to handle them without causing a fire risk, because they can ignite under pressure in rubbish trucks or when damaged.

More than 30 of these drop off locations will be in regional Victoria, ensuring communities across the state have access to more convenient disposal options.

Recycling batteries divert hazardous materials from landfill and recycle valuable metals such as copper, nickel and steel for reuse in new products.

The Labor Government’s Small Acts Big Impact campaign is supporting families to recycle correctly by reminding households that batteries and e-waste do not belong in kerbside bins.

Victorians can find their nearest battery recycling location at recyclemate.com.au.
